Each year, the Ontario Library Association runs the ‘Forest of Reading’ Program. This program involves nominating Canadian authors in several categories, spanning all levels of elementary and secondary. Check out http://bit.ly/1SeH3H6 for all of the details.
This year, I wanted to try a new tool to increase the engagement of students in our Forest club at Nahani Way. Having most recently taught grade one, I had not had the chance to blog with my students, and I had heard amazing things about KidBlog…so I thought it might be a good place to start!
The results were fantastic. Students were coming into the LLC every morning to read and every Monday at lunch to blog. It was almost too overwhelming! The challenge became reading and commenting on each entry. Keeping up with all of the responses was exhausting and exhilarating.
My hope is to share this success with staff next year and see how many classes we can get blogging. There are a few classes already starting, but my hope is to get a community of bloggers that can share ideas across grades. Maybe even use Kidblog as a platform for mentorship.
Tomorrow the students and I will be celebrating the work that we have done over the last four months. As we review our success, it will be a good time to reflect on what we would like to continue for next year.
